Licensing & Legal Requirements
What is a PAL and how do I get one?
A PAL (Possession and Acquisition Licence) is required to buy or possess most firearms in Canada.
You can obtain one by completing the Canadian Firearms Safety Course and passing the test. Search online for local certified instructors who can guide you through the application process.
Do I need a PAL to purchase ammunition?
Yes. A valid PAL is required to purchase ammunition in Canada.
Do I need a PAL to purchase firearms?
There are three exceptions:
- Flintlock muzzleloading rifles
- Air guns with a velocity under 500 feet per second
- Firearms classified as “antique”
Laws change, so verify with the RCMP Canadian Firearms Program:
RCMP CFP Firearm Sales Info or call 1-800-731-4000.
How do I legally sell firearms?
- No PAL required for flintlock muzzleloaders, antiques, or air guns under 500 fps.
- PAL required for all other firearm sales..
How can I validate someone’s PAL?
For restricted firearms, obtain the buyer’s full name (as on the RPAL), RPAL number, and expiry date. The CFP will verify ownership. We do not recommend sending PAL photos—use in-person checks or live video calls.
Using Gunxpress
Will others see my email or home address?
No. Neither is publicly visible. The “View Map” feature uses only your postal code to show a general location. You may choose to display only the first three characters.
How do I renew my ad?
Use the Bump Up upgrade when editing your ad ($1.29). This moves it to the top of search results and resets the 90-day expiry. Expired ads remain in your account for 14 days under My Account → My Posts → Expired Ads.
I paid for a Top Ad, why don’t I always see it at the top?
Top Ad slots are limited to 3 at a time. If more than 3 Top Ads exist in a category/location, they rotate randomly. As buyers refine their searches, your ad will have fewer ads to compete with.
How do I create an account?
Click Register (desktop) or Create an Account (mobile). Enter a username, email, and verify with reCAPTCHA. Follow the instructions sent to your email.
How do I leave someone a review?
Click the user’s profile from your Gunxpress messages or ad page and scroll to the review section. You can also search usernames via Active Members in the site footer.
